Below are several sermon series that have been preached at Phoenix United Reformed Church during recent years.
Recent Sermons
Phoenix United Reformed Church follows a long standing practice of Reformed Churches wherein the elders request that the minister of God's Word regularly follow the outline of the Reformed Confessions for sermon topics. This ensures that all aspects of the Gospel of the Christian Faith are addressed.
The Basics of the Christian Faith
This particular sermon series explains the central beliefs of Christianity as set forth in the The Heidelberg Catechism. The Catechsim guides us through a balanced study of the fundamendal themes of the Holy Scripture.
The Belgic Confession, the earliest of the Reformed Confessions, is a reasoned outline of the doctrines of the Christian Faith. deBres was a minister of the Reformed Church in what today is Belgium and Northern France when the church was under persecution by Phillip the Holy Roman Emperor from Spain. deBres writes this confession and is martyred.
The Canons of Dordt, another of the Reformed Confessions, responds to teachers who began to expound false ideas at the University of Lyden during the early 1500's. These ideas questioned whether the Sovreign God alone was the source of our salvation or if man himself held the keys to Grace.
IICorinthians -- God's Word To The Church
The Apostle Paul's letter to the church at Corinth is a letter to Christians in a very immoral environment. The church struggles with issues with which we can relate.
Parables -- Parables Addressing God's Kingdom
Jesus often used Parables to explain and emphasize His Kingdom. These same Parables are very important to help us try to get a grasp of Jesus's promised glorious Kingdom.
Hosea -- God Loves His Covenant People
The Old Testament prophecy of Hosea demonstrates God's unfailing love to His adulterous people. Hosea's life is a disasterous picture of a people abandoning their covenant calling.
Colossians -- Living The Faith
The Apostle Paul's letter to the Colossian Christians is a call to faith in action. That is the knowledge of salvation demonstrated in life situations.
Facets of Salvation -- Soeteriology
God has saved me by His Grace. What is really involved in that great Christian Truth?
The Basic Question Today, "Who is the God we worship and what can and do we know about Him?"
Genesis teaches the very basics of our existence. This series covers the first half of the book of Beginnings
God chose a most unlikely messenger whom He used to launch the new testament church beyond the Jewish community. This series teaches from the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul.
Lent 2006 -- Egyptian Hallel (Psalm 113-118)
This short series on the topic of lent helps the congregation to prepare to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Advent 2005 -- The Biography of Jesus
This short series on the topic of advent helps the congregation to prepare to celebrate the birth of Our Lord.
On special occasions we have sermons that are not part of a series.
Periodically we have guest ministers.
