reaching Rev. Spotts

An explanation of his accessibility

I share this information in hopes it staves off misunderstandings.

As a shepherd, I take the needs, questions, and concerns of Christ’s flock seriously. I seek to make myself available to anyone wishing to speak or meet with me. At the same time, my distinct role as Minister of the Word entails intensive study, as well as organizing my research into clear, finished forms of communication. There is no way to faithfully shortcut this process. As in other fields, depth and quality of pastoral study requires periods of intense, uninterrupted concentration.

Each day, I block out a period—usually 3-4 hours—for distraction-free focus. During these times, I turn off incoming texts, emails, calls, and web browsers. This may seem odd to people accustomed to instant responses, who work in fields unrelated to research or writing, or who have experienced other pastors who always responded instantly. Nevertheless, I believe periods of “deep work” are necessary to how I fulfill my mandate.

For this reason, there may be times when it’s harder to reach me. Rest assured, I aim to respond in a timely fashion, usually within the day. Messages arriving after 6pm are typically dealt with the next day.

if your need is time-sensitive:

  • TEXTING — Begin your message, “TIME SENSITIVE.” I will prioritize it.

  • EMAIL — Please request from our Secretary.

If your need is urgent:

  • Call the church Secretary, Mrs. Megan Kuiper. She can forward you to Rev. Smith, an Elder or Deacon, or reach me directly if necessary.

If your need is an emergency:

  • For serious medical, mental, and emotional crises, call 911. Do not prioritize one man’s prayer or counsel above the regular means God uses to treat such emergencies.

Thank you for understanding and supporting my service to Christ’s church in this way.
